'CRACKERJACK'
By Joe Morley
The dictionary gives this definition of the word ‘Crackerjack’: U.S. slang; Exceptionally fine or splendid person or thing. It is well-known that Morley had more trouble thinking of titles than in composing his solos, but whether he thought of this one, or his publisher did, it is certainly an accurate description of the piece, — apart from also describing Morley himself, of course ! This is one of his ‘tricky’ solos, and if taken at the given metronome speed it is not easy, but taken a little slower, it is great fun to play. It is unusual for Morley to show a metronome speed, and also fairly rare to find dynamics, although those that are given are rather basic. There is an interesting place in the third of the four sections, where the solo printed part shows an A, but the piano guide and the accompaniment show an A flat. This is noted in the present publication, so players are made aware of it, and given the choice, — the effect is an unusual (for Morley) ‘blue’ note. Altogether, a very worthwhile solo.
